"Fragments" : Footprints are not always Footsteps
Fragments is an emerging interdisciplinary ensemble working across collective improvisation, sound art, piano, voice, saxophone, percussion, synths, bass and effects, theater, poetry, movement, drawing, painting, live analogue projections, DIY objects and live scenographic environments.
How can we meet through the traces we carry?
Footprints Are Not Always Footsteps is a six-month artistic research project exploring the relationship between collective improvisation, memory and composition. Working across sound, movement, text, image, objects and live environments, the emerging ensemble Fragments investigates how traces generated through shared improvisational practice can be revisited, transformed and reactivated over time.
Footprints are not always footsteps.
When we look at a trace, we do not see the action that created it. We see only its imprint. The step itself has already disappeared.
Improvisation is the continuous flow of footsteps. Listening, responding, deciding, hesitating, risking, moving. As long as the flow continues, something remains alive. Collective improvisation constantly produces traces. Most disappear. Some remain.
Improvisation produces footsteps.
Composition revisits footprints.
New footsteps emerge when we return to them.
The ensemble does not compose from nothing. It composes by listening to what has already happened. A recording. A drawing. A gesture. A score. A remembered moment. An environment. Through revisiting, observing and transforming these traces, new forms become possible.
No recording contains the whole experience.
No score contains the whole experience.
No drawing contains the whole experience.
No performer contains the whole experience.
No archive contains the whole experience.
Each holds only a fragment.
Fragments emerges from the recognition that collective experience can never be contained within a single medium, perspective or memory. The group exists precisely because no fragment is sufficient on its own.
Several questions guide the research. How can we meet through the traces we carry? How do traces generated through collective improvisation become material for future action? How does collective memory influence real-time artistic decision-making? What happens between collective improvisation and instant composition? How can sound become image, image become movement, movement become notation, and notation return to improvisation?
Throughout the residency, the ensemble will search for traces beyond itself: people, practices, archives, scores, communities and histories connected to collective improvisation, experimental performance and listening practices. Particular attention will be given to connections between Berlin and Leipzig, not simply as locations but as living artistic ecosystems. The residency unfolds between communities, personal archives, improvisational practices and ongoing conversations. Movements between cities, scenes and artistic contexts are not merely logistical circumstances but an active part of the research itself.
Improvisation is the engine.
Memory is the material.
The cycle is the choreography.
Memory → Trace → Search → Return → Transformation → New Memory...

Who carries them ?
Fragments emerges from the belief that no single medium, practice or perspective can fully contain the complexity of collective experience. The ensemble brings together artists working across sound, movement, text, image, objects and environments, each carrying different tools, memories, questions and ways of listening.
The group exists precisely because no fragment is sufficient on its own.
